Artist Statement

My work investigates humanity in all its complicated messiness: its gestures and postures, its behaviors, habits, relationships, and neurosis; and how, through my imagery, I may communicate or trigger an emotional response in the viewer. I strive to imbue my sculptures with narratives and emotions that may be difficult to confront, and in a form that one may find stimulation or allure or maybe something troubling. While these characteristics are what typify my static work, my experiences as a teaching artist have begun to influence and otherwise motivate me to create better opportunities for connection. It has become increasingly important for me to seek a relationship to a larger community through learning, collaborating, making, and displaying. There is an inherently collaborative and performative component to teaching, and especially so when teaching in the arts. For me, there is a joy in that. By working in a communal space, whether as teacher or artist, I derive a deeper satisfaction. Let’s make a connection!

Last year's workshop was amazing, this year's promises to be even better!

A 2-day workshop led by the very imaginitive clay artist and teacher:

GRAYSON FAIR

ABBY S

In this workshop, participants will explore the art of embellishing and altering wheel-thrown pottery using gestural, spontaneous techniques. By integrating gesture into the pottery-making process, participants will not only learn how to enhance the form and texture of their pieces, but also how to infuse their work with personal expression. The primary goal is to empower participants to step outside traditional boundaries and explore their own unique voice within the craft of ceramics.

The focus will be on action and gesture, two core elements that help give life to the forms. Participants will learn how simple gestures, movement, and spontaneity can transform a basic wheel-thrown pot into a personalized, one-of-a-kind piece of art. Participants will need some experience  with wheel-throwing. Workshop fee includes clay. Firing of your work at TCC is optional but if desired, is priced by weight.

$445 / Participant (Limited to 8) A bag lunch is suggested.
