Living Fantasies PREVIEW
Meet Christopher Taylor
“I have a memory from when I was seven years old, and I feel this experience is reflected in my art. I was sleeping on the deck of my family's sailboat anchored in a small bay in Bora Bora. I woke before sunrise, grabbed my snorkel and jumped overboard to explore the reef below us. It was as dark as ink but, as the sun rose, it revealed the enchanted world around me. This was the perfect time to begin gathering sea shells that hadn’t yet escaped to their hiding places. Hunting sea shells was my greatest passion as a young boy. Since that time, searching for hidden treasures continues to be a passion of mine and a primary theme in my art.”
Chris Taylor was born in San Diego, CA and spent much of his early years living on a sailboat in the South Pacific Islands. At twelve, he and his family moved to Hawaii where he lived until 1977 when he received a BFA from the University of Hawaii. Following graduation, Chris traveled through a large part of Western Europe on bicycle for more than a year. During this time, he studied the old European Masters while visiting museums along the way. In 1986, Chris graduated from the University of New Mexico with a master’s degree in Printmaking. In 1997, Chris graduated from Loyola Marymount University in CA with a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Counseling with a focus on Art Therapy.
Chris is a resident of San cristobal, NM and has been a student of printmaking at UNM Taos since 2010. He is also a Visiting Artist with Taos Municipal Schools and Taos Charter School and together with his wife, Debi Taylor, has been making large scale tile mosaic murals with elementary and middle school students since 2010. They are currently working on their 9th mural and have worked with over 2000 students in Taos County
