No one teaches Animal Sculpture quite like Alma Quillian! This class will focus on developing and refining your clay forming skills to produce representational sculptural work. Basic construction techniques such as coil, slab, and the use of armatures will be covered, along with surface treatment and finishing. The class will combine group demonstrations with individual attention from the instructor.
All levels of experience welcome. Fee includes one optional Open Studio time of 2-3 hours per week.
Previous clay experience is not required.

Surface Design
The next dimension!
The class will cover the basics of surface treatment including sgraffito, carving into the clay surface through an applied layer of color to reveal a contrast color. Other techniques will be explored as well including wax and paper resist, applied texture and surface relief. Bring your ideas, roll up your sleeves and be prepared to learn and work hard while having lots of fun!!
Some experience in clay preferred but not essential.

Hand Building!
Pinch, Coil, Slab and More!
This class is taught by one of the area’s most respected instructors, Lee Akins. It is designed to explore the many aspects of hand-building with clay, including sculpture, for both those new to clay and those more experienced. It includes pinch pots, coil, slab, and more. Lee will make presentations, offer examples, and provide demonstrations. The level of lecture and demonstration is sensitive to the experience of the students.

Raku is a low-temperature fast-firing technique that achieves unique metallic and lustrous surfaces by cooling the piece in a smoky atmosphere. We will cover basic and specialty raku techniques including Halo, Slip Resist (or Naked Raku), Copper Mat, Obvara, Horsehair. Smoke Firing techniques will include Saggar and Terra Sigillata. Students will see examples and demonstrations and be able to try the techniques. Some experience in clay is helpful.

Wheel Throwing
Your choice of Thursday or Saturday!
This class is for adults and young adults (16+) with little or no experience AS WELL AS those seeking a refresher or carry through from a previous wheel throwing class!
Taught by one of two very accomplished ceramicists and instructors, Sjoran Fitzpatrick and Turiya Gross, you will undoubtedly develop a good foundation in throwing while having a great deal of fun!
The structure of the class will allow for group and individual instruction, sensitive to the pace
of each and every student.
