Hand Building!

Pinch, Coil, Slab and More!

In this class, essential hand building skills: pinching and modeling, coiling and scraping, carving and slab construction – are introduced though a series of projects. In each class, instructor will introduce the project through hands-on demonstration and showing examples - both historical and contemporary. Two of the projects will use ancient hand building techniques: a carved Japanese-style tea bowl and a Native American-style coiled and scraped jar. All levels of experience (or not!) welcome. 

Fee includes one optional Open Studio time of 2-3 hours per week.

Raku is a low-temperature fast-firing technique that achieves unique metallic and lustrous surfaces by cooling the piece in a smoky atmosphere. We will cover basic and specialty raku techniques including Halo, Slip Resist (or Naked Raku), Copper Mat, Obvara, Horsehair. Smoke Firing techniques will include Saggar and Terra Sigillata. Students will see examples and demonstrations and be able to try the techniques. Some experience in clay is helpful.

Fee includes one optional Open Studio time of 2-3 hours per week.

Wheel Throwing II

The next step for those with a basic understanding of the wheel! 

This class is designed for those looking to build on their existing wheel throwing skills. In each class, your instructor will explore different techniques on the wheel with special attention given to your personal strengths, weaknesses, and desires. The structure of the class will allow for each student to set their own  goals and to receive the personalized direction necessary to meet them. 

Fee includes one optional Open Studio time of 2-3 hours per week.

KIDS
INTRO
TO CLAY!
Ages 6-11

This 8-week class for children from ages 6 to 11 will be geared towards exploring some of the various avenues of building with clay with a focus on creativity and FUN! Classes will be project oriented.  We hope to explore many ways of creating with clay including pinch, coil, slab, and surface texture.

All students will have some fun things to take home and a sense of pride and accomplishment!

The ceramic sculpture class will focus on developing and refining clay forming skills for both representational and abstracted sculptural work. Basic construction techniques such as coil, slab, and the use of armatures will be covered, along with surface treatment and finishing. The class will combine group demonstrations and slide lectures along with individual attention from the instructor.

All levels of experience welcome. Fee includes one optional Open Studio time of 2-3 hours per week.

Sculpting with Clay

Beginning Wheel Throwing

Learn how to throw a pot!

In this class, students will learn the basics of throwing on the potter's wheel. An emphasis will be placed on centering and effectively forming functional objects on the wheel. By the end of this session, students should be proficient in the basics of throwing, trimming, and glazing a finished, functional ceramic piece.

Group instruction and individual attention will be provided.

Beginners from ages 16+ and refreshers are welcome.
Fee includes one optional Open Studio time of 2-3 hours per week.
